What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
“Renovations/companies are not cheap by any means, however, my company
tries to be as fair as possible with pricing on projects for the best possible outcome.”
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
” Start-up of the initial interaction can vary depending on the route of
communication you choose. Once we receive your contact information, I will
reach out to you to discuss more about the specific job you’re looking to hire for.
Once we talk, we will set a date that works best for both parties for me to come
out to the “job site” and have a look around at what needs to be done. From then
on, I can give you an estimate and hopefully answer any questions you might
have, after that we will book you in our calendar for the start dates of the job
providing that you choose to go with us for your job.”
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
“I started working in this field and others like it, when I was young, back in 2009. I
got my first roofing job with a Pittsburgh-based company. From then on, I was
ambitious and wanted to learn everything there was that concerned my trade. So
I went from job to job, mostly union-based, for years. Learning everything by
hands-on experience and being taught by many different mentors who helped
mold me into the contractor that I am today. Then I entered the
handyman/maintenance man era by subcontracting for a real estate broker in
Pitcairn, maintaining over 300 units.”
How did you get started doing this type of work?
”Most of the men (and some of the women) in my family are union workers, so I
was brought into the union trades at a very early age in life, pretty much all I’ve
known really. As I grew up and realized just how vast this line of work can be to
the point where I don’t think you could ever possibly be bored, I just knew this was
the line of work for me.”
What types of customers have you worked with?
“It started out with other business owners wanting small jobs done that they
just didn’t have time to do it themselves. Then, as I got older and better with the
trade(s), it moved to family friends of my parents. After that, is when I got into the
subcontractor job with the real estate broker, and I worked with all kinds of
diversity that you could imagine.”
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
”They say hard manual labor is good for a young man growing up, at least that’s
what my family always led me to believe. So in 2009, when I started as a
laborer, I was allowed to move up in the Pittsburgh-based roofing
company. This continued through 2010, teaching me new things each day, like
laying shingles and cutting starters.”
– ”High school was a bore for me..I didn’t want to be inside studying, listening to
teachers teach. I wanted to be outside building something, cutting grass, or
weed-eating somewhere. So I thought maybe if I went to a technical school for
agriculture, I would get to be outside doing what I love some more! Well,
wasn’t I wrong, but I learned some amazing things about the earth, some things i
still apply to this day. So upon graduation in 2014, I obtained my first landscaping
property management contract, so I got to put all of that good knowledge to some
use for a few years!”
– ”As the years went on, I did so many things in the trade that I honestly couldn’t
even being able to remember what all of it was, but I do remember back in 2017, I was
traveling to and from West Virginia and Ohio constantly for a few weeks, painting
the inside and outside of Walmart stores. Learned so many things during this time in
my life, including how Walmart goes about vetting contractors.”
– ”Lastly, in 2023, I had put in a brand new kitchen top to bottom of a rental unit that
was included with that property management contract I spoke about earlier. It
was an old building, so it had a very old kitchen that needed some major
updates. In all, the job took a few weeks, might have taken longer than anticipated
at first, because you never know what you’re going to run into when you start
tearing stuff down. However, the result of this kitchen was phenomenal and
well worth the few weeks of work that it took.”
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
”The first one you reach out to is 8 times out of 10 not the one you’re going to
hire, and that’s okay. Take your time, go through your options (there are more of us
than some people realize), and get different opinions before fully making your
decision. Find someone that you know you’re going to get along with, someone
that is honest about what they do and how they do it, obviously someone who has
quite a bit of experience in this line of work, but most importantly, find someone
that is in this line of work because they LOVE i,t not because of the money…the
ones that love it are the ones that are going to take pride in what they do for you
and are going to do it for you RIGHT.”
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
– ”While you are going to get a ballpark estimate of a job, it is best if you ask the
professional if they think there’s a chance that the project could cost more money
than initially estimated because that happens a lot more than you think, then
people get upset and don’t have enough money saved for it, and the project
doesn’t get finished. Its best to be overly prepared for the project than under.
Another thing would be to ask how the professional is going to do the job; you
may find it interesting to know exactly how this professional is going to hang a
ceiling fan on the ceiling without a prior light there or something similar. Don’t
ever be afraid to ask questions.”
